Tourist Attractions in Geszt

Though small, Geszt offers a surprising variety of historical and natural attractions worth discovering. The village lies in the eastern part of Békés County, close to the Romanian border, and invites visitors to explore its rich heritage and peaceful rural charm.

Tisza Castle: The most prominent landmark of the village, originally built in 1772 in Baroque style and later expanded with Classicist elements. It served as the ancestral home of the influential Tisza family, which gave Hungary two prime ministers — Kálmán Tisza and István Tisza. After a full restoration, the castle reopened in 2024. Its interactive exhibition and the 19-hectare landscaped park welcome visitors throughout the year.
Arany János Memorial House: Located in the castle park, this charming thatched-roof cottage houses an intimate exhibition dedicated to the poet János Arany, who lived in Geszt while working as a tutor for the Tisza family’s children. The house can be freely visited during a walk in the park, and entry is free of charge.
Tisza Family Crypt: A few hundred meters from the castle stands the mausoleum of the Tisza family, where thirty-three family members rest, including Prime Ministers Kálmán and István Tisza. Nestled in a small wooded area, the crypt can be viewed from the outside at any time of day; guided interior visits are possible by special arrangement.
Reformed Church: Next to the castle stands the Reformed Church, built in late Baroque (copf) style between 1775 and 1776 and completely renovated in 2022. Inside the church gallery, an exhibition presents the history of the Tisza family and their connection to the local congregation. Regular Sunday services are held, and visits can be arranged by appointment.
Csörsz Ditch (Devil’s Ditch): The remains of an ancient defensive earthwork cross the fields near the village. This several-kilometre-long embankment dates back to Roman times and is considered an important archaeological monument. It forms part of the Körös–Maros National Park and offers an excellent hiking destination.
Alföld Blue Trail: Geszt lies along the official route of this long-distance hiking trail. Hikers can collect a trail stamp at the Tisza Castle visitor building, and it’s worth pausing here to explore the local sights before continuing toward Biharugra.
